Hot Trend: Gingham

No longer a fabric limited to newborn babies and 50s housewives, gingham is back in style this season- and in small doses, I think it's quite stylish. Here are a few of my favorite incarnations of the trend...

Lots of designers are making gingham western shirts this season, but Gap has my favorite reasonably-priced take on the look. This shirt is $54.50 and also comes in red and navy. Love.

Hot Trend: The Shirtdress

Vanessa Hudgens in a shirtdress only a skinny girl could get away with.

I've never liked the classic shirtdress- It always seemed to come in awkward, stiff fabric and it never fit my frame quite right. However, shirtdresses are all the rage this season and I'm happy to find that they've been reinvented in all kinds of fabrics and styles that will flatter nearly any figure.

What I love about most about this season's shirtdresses is that they're relatively inexpensive, they work in just about any social situation imaginable, and they never really go out of style.

Hot Trend: Graphic Prints

One of my least favorite hot trends for Spring is the graphic print, which technology has made possible only in the last few years. Think of graphic prints as color copies on fabric instead of paper.

It's definitely a hot look now- but one that I think will be made fun of next decade, much like we now make fun of Laura Ashley dresses.

Hot Trend: Leopard Print

My new leopard clogs have arrived just in time (they're still on sale at Hanna Andersson for $30, FYI)- The leopard look is hot among fashionistas here in Nashville and around the world, it carried over to the runways of Spring 2010 in the form of shoes and accessories, and I'm a big fan of this trend.

However, there's a right way to wear the look and a wrong way. At The Monkey's Treehouse, where all the local well-to-do mommies take their kids to play, I spotted a woman in leopard clogs and a leopard print vest. No, no no no no no nooooo. I have to insist that you wear no more than one leopard print item at a time- and keep the rest of your outfit very, very simple.

Hot Trend: Red Lips

Red lips are a classic look that's really hot right now, but use caution- It's very easy to get your red all wrong and end up looking like a reject from cosmetology school. Case in point: Christina Aguilera.

Christina has been making the paparazzi circuit 24-7 lately, generally with her poor son in tow, and her garish look is driving me crazy. The has-been diva's perpetually red lips complete the clown effect she creates with way too much eye makeup, orange foundation, and platinum blonde hair. YUCK.

The basic rule with red lipstick is that if you're going to do it, tone everything else down. Go low key with your hair and eye makeup. And if you're a platinum blonde, just avoid the red lipstick altogether unless you just really want to be mistaken for a hooker.
