Right This Moment: Fringe

As Nicole Richie and Evangeline Lilly prove, not only is fringe here to stay...

It's only getting more glamorous.

Help Desk: Can a Preschool Teacher Be Stylish AND Realistic?

Today's Help Desk question comes from Meghan:

I am a preschool teacher, at a Christian school, and we have a very strict dress code. We must dress professional, business casual, but I'm running around with kids all day, so I need comfort and wash-ability when it comes to clothes. We must wear closed toed shoes, or sandals with straps (no heels). We can wear pants, capris, and the occasional dark denim jean, skirts and dresses, but they must come down to at least our knee. Shirts must have sleeves, must not be too tight, can't be revealing (at all), and need to be cool, as it is about to be summer time in Texas, and we spend a lot of time outside. I usually wear a pair of khakis, a fitted t-shirt made of a nicer material than a regular tee, a cardigan, and loafers. Boring. If I'm feeling exciting, I'll wear a skirt, sandals, and a blouse... with a cardigan. I have a huge walk-in closet full of clothes- mostly basics, but for some reason, I can't put together an outfit that is stylish for work. I'm starting to look like my kindergarten teachers- I'm afraid holiday vests and ankle length denim skirts are around the corner. :(

Help Desk: Find Me a Stylish Bag that Can Hold All My Kids' Stuff!

SSGI reader Autumn needs help! Here's her fashion dilemma-
I don't have a "babies aren't with me" social bag. I grab whatever sort-of looks in-season. Usually from Target circa 2002.

I also have a bigger problem. Their school is in my building for work. I look like a baglady when I walk in.

Hot Trend: Orange. Still.

Taylor Swift's bag adds interest to an otherwise understated outfit. (One note, though, Tay Tay. Lose the boots.)

Emmy Rossum is a standoutin this bold dress.

Hot Trend: Gingham

No longer a fabric limited to newborn babies and 50s housewives, gingham is back in style this season- and in small doses, I think it's quite stylish. Here are a few of my favorite incarnations of the trend...

Lots of designers are making gingham western shirts this season, but Gap has my favorite reasonably-priced take on the look. This shirt is $54.50 and also comes in red and navy. Love.

You Can Do This: Jessica Alba's Mom Chic

Remember how I said last week that I loved this look on Jessica Alba?

Well I meant it!

I found this shirt last weekend at Forever 21 for $6.80. It's a dead ringer for Jessica's. But all by itself, this is one boring mom uniform, don't you think? In fact, I look like I'm in mom prison. (And sometimes I feel that way, too.)

That's where the Lands End sale I told you about came in. I ordered a long yellow scarf like Jessica's...

...and voila!

Mandy's Got a Brand New Bag!

Look at the new bag SSGI reader Mandy found for under $100 at a Coach outlet! Not only is it totally cute, it's in one of the hottest handbag colors of the season.

Once you've picked up a trendy bright handbag, you may be flummoxed when trying to decide what to wear with it (I know I was). Here are a few examples provided by the stars.

Miranda Kerr proves there's no need to stick to solids when carrying a blue bag.

Mary-Kate Olsen uses her blue bag to break up the black.

Show and Tell: Turquoise Beads

I just bought this pair of heavy glass turquoise beads on Etsy and I love, love, love them!

I had been looking for a turquoise necklace to go with this dress, which I bought on deep discount at J. Crew over the winter. The beads are a nice contrast to the coral and I've found they also look fantastic with yellow, emerald green and black. Turquoise is hot this season, but invest in a nice pair of classic beads and you'll have a look that will work for years to come. Retro-looking turquoise beads never really go out of style.

Yay or Nay: Double Cuffs

What does spring fashion have to do with Wonder Woman?

Cuff bracelets are big right now, and the most daring fashionistas are wearing one on each wrist. I particularly like Demi's take on the trend- Her cuffs really liven up what would otherwise be a boring white dress. And in general, the look isn't so "out there" that people would do a doubletake when they saw you in your matching cuffs.

New at Target: Eugenia Kim's Hats and Cynthia Vincent's Shoes

New York milliner Eugenia Kim's hat line debuted yesterday at Targets nationwide. What's the big deal about Eugenia Kim, you ask? Well for starters, every hat in her Target line is under $20. Compare that with her regular line of stylish hats, which average between two and three hundred dollars apiece, and you see what a great deal you're getting! The entire collection is here, but here are a few of my favorites...

This hat is totally my style and would work perfectly at the beach- among other places! It's $19.99 at Target.

Yay or Nay: Pedicure in Black

If you haven't heard already, black polish is totally hot right now. I'm seeing it on everyone from Carmen Electra to our girl Jennifer Aniston. It looks hip on celebrities, but I wasn't sure it would go over so well in the car rider pick-up line. And then I saw a photo a few weeks ago of Fergie, I think, with a black polish pedicure and a soft pink manicure.

Eureka.

You Can Do This: Kate Moss's Nautical Chic

Kate Moss has about the coolest style of anyone out there right now. Each time I see photographs of her, she's inventive and at the forefront of fashion, yet most of her looks are also classic and would work, with minor modifications, on just about anyone. This recent look is one of my absolute favorites, and you can easily copy it! Take a look...

Start with a navy and white-striped nautical shirt. They're everywhere right now. This one is $82 from Farfetch.com.

You Can Do This: Jennifer Aniston's Pendants

We see so many photos of celebrities wearing borrowed jewelry worth millions of dollars that it's easy to assume we'll never be able to compete with the stars in that department.

The truth is, though, that some of the most fabulous-looking leading ladies have one or two special pieces they like to wear almost every day. Often, they're not even expensive. Case in point: Jennifer Aniston.

What I'm Wearing

Easter 2010

So I'll be honest. I HATE taking pictures of myself and I HATE posting them on this blog. I tend to pick myself apart when I see these pictures and wish my hair had more volume and my waist were smaller and I had a tan and blah blah blah. You know how it is.

Help Desk: Shorts

The weather is getting warmer, which means it's time to drop some of those layers and show some skin. Consequently, my inbox has been filling up with e-mails from readers like Emily...
Dear Lindsay,

Now that summertime is nearly here, I have a very important question. We know your view on capris, but what is your official stance on shorts? Are they a do or a don't? Or a sometimes-it-depends-on-the-shorts-and-also-your-legs? If you are not completely opposed to them, could you show us some examples?Inquiring minds want to know.
