New Find: Shop the Look

SSGI reader Irina clued me in to Shop the Look, a jewelry website with fantastically inexpensive takes on some of the latest trends. This is a great place to go when you want to try a here-today-gone-tomorrow kind of style, without spending a whole lot of money on it.

Here are just a few of my favorite Shop the Look examples.

Today is a fantastic time to stock up on basics at Old Navy. Now through May second, Old Navy's offering 30% off some select spring styles. Horrors: When Topknots Attack!

Yes, I know topknots are all the rage right now, but J. Lo let hers get a leetle bit out of control. Okay, make that a lot. It looks like the woman's wearing a hat made of matted hair, and that's just gross.

What do you think of this look?

The Romper: Yay or Nay?

There is very little that irritates me more than the romper.

I mean, seriously. What other piece of clothing could make even Blake Lively appear to have a waist that begins right beneath her boobs and a lower abdominal 'pooch?'

Help Desk: Find Me a Stylish Bag that Can Hold All My Kids' Stuff!

SSGI reader Autumn needs help! Here's her fashion dilemma-
I don't have a "babies aren't with me" social bag. I grab whatever sort-of looks in-season. Usually from Target circa 2002.

I also have a bigger problem. Their school is in my building for work. I look like a baglady when I walk in.

You Can Do This: Pair Your Turquoise Accessories with Navy

Chances are, you've picked up something (things?) in turquoise this season, whether it's a necklace, flats, a bag, or a cardigan. We've talked on this blog about pairing your turquoise gear with coral. Or black. Or yellow. Or even emerald green.

But have you considered navy?

Susan has.

Hot Trend: The Knot

Mary J. Blige keeps it classy in this figure-forgiving knotted gown.

Kristen, Gwyneth and Ali Larter stay on top of the trend in their draped skirts.

Many designers featured fluid, draped clothing on the runways for Spring 2010- and one of the chief ways it has been interpreted in real life is with knotted shirts and dresses. This is good news for moms in particular- It gives some definition to areas you like (your chest and decolletage) and easily hides the areas you don't like (your waistline). Want proof? Take a look at these options...

Hot Trend: Gingham

No longer a fabric limited to newborn babies and 50s housewives, gingham is back in style this season- and in small doses, I think it's quite stylish. Here are a few of my favorite incarnations of the trend...

Lots of designers are making gingham western shirts this season, but Gap has my favorite reasonably-priced take on the look. This shirt is $54.50 and also comes in red and navy. Love.

New Find: Metalista

I discovered Metalista when the jewelry maker/mom (whose name I can't find anywhere!) began following me on Twitter. My interest was piqued and I checked out her website. I'm glad I did- My husband and I both love her necklaces and I think I'll be getting at least one of them (and hopefully two! Or three!) for Mother's Day.

Here are three of my favorite pieces...

You Can Do This: Jessica Alba's Mom Chic

Remember how I said last week that I loved this look on Jessica Alba?

Well I meant it!

I found this shirt last weekend at Forever 21 for $6.80. It's a dead ringer for Jessica's. But all by itself, this is one boring mom uniform, don't you think? In fact, I look like I'm in mom prison. (And sometimes I feel that way, too.)

That's where the Lands End sale I told you about came in. I ordered a long yellow scarf like Jessica's...

...and voila!

New Find: A. Tierney

Generally, I'm not pleased when someone adds me to an e-mail subscriber list without my knowledge. I guess A. Tierney was the exception that proves my rule. :)

Located in New York, A. Tierney is a purveyor of the preppy. The selection on the A. Tierney website is small but unforgettable, not to mention extremely well-priced. Check out these options...

You have all made it very clear that you LOVE Yummie Tummie- and I have been wearing out my Yummie Tummie tank this spring. So I have some good news....

Yummie Tummie is now making leggings!

I was sent a pair for review and I can tell you right now, I have three pairs of black leggings (Hanna Andersson, LOFT, and Forever 21) and the Yummie Tummies just blow all my other pairs out of the water. I'm wearing them today, in fact. (I took this picture just a few minutes ago.) And um... I wore them yesterday, too. DON'T TELL.

Mandy's Got a Brand New Bag!

Look at the new bag SSGI reader Mandy found for under $100 at a Coach outlet! Not only is it totally cute, it's in one of the hottest handbag colors of the season.

Once you've picked up a trendy bright handbag, you may be flummoxed when trying to decide what to wear with it (I know I was). Here are a few examples provided by the stars.

Miranda Kerr proves there's no need to stick to solids when carrying a blue bag.

Mary-Kate Olsen uses her blue bag to break up the black.

Show and Tell: Turquoise Beads

I just bought this pair of heavy glass turquoise beads on Etsy and I love, love, love them!

I had been looking for a turquoise necklace to go with this dress, which I bought on deep discount at J. Crew over the winter. The beads are a nice contrast to the coral and I've found they also look fantastic with yellow, emerald green and black. Turquoise is hot this season, but invest in a nice pair of classic beads and you'll have a look that will work for years to come. Retro-looking turquoise beads never really go out of style.

Yay or Nay: Double Cuffs

What does spring fashion have to do with Wonder Woman?

Cuff bracelets are big right now, and the most daring fashionistas are wearing one on each wrist. I particularly like Demi's take on the trend- Her cuffs really liven up what would otherwise be a boring white dress. And in general, the look isn't so "out there" that people would do a doubletake when they saw you in your matching cuffs.

New at Target: Eugenia Kim's Hats and Cynthia Vincent's Shoes

New York milliner Eugenia Kim's hat line debuted yesterday at Targets nationwide. What's the big deal about Eugenia Kim, you ask? Well for starters, every hat in her Target line is under $20. Compare that with her regular line of stylish hats, which average between two and three hundred dollars apiece, and you see what a great deal you're getting! The entire collection is here, but here are a few of my favorites...

This hat is totally my style and would work perfectly at the beach- among other places! It's $19.99 at Target.

What We're Wearing

Didn't SSGI reader Abi look pretty on Easter Sunday?

Here's what she wore: a Charlotte Russe belted eyelet dress and sweater, a green bead necklace from Macy's and white braided sandals from Shi by Journeys.

Shops that market to teenagers, like Charlotte Russe, Forever 21,Delia's and Tilly's are fantastic dirty little secrets, if you haven't shopped them already. I work inexpensive pieces from these stores (as well as the Juniors section at department stores) into my wardrobe whenever I can. I'm sure Abi paid a fraction of what she would have if she'd shopped at a department store in the women's section- and she looks fantastic!

Yay or Nay: The Crown Braid

Yay or Nay: Pedicure in Black

If you haven't heard already, black polish is totally hot right now. I'm seeing it on everyone from Carmen Electra to our girl Jennifer Aniston. It looks hip on celebrities, but I wasn't sure it would go over so well in the car rider pick-up line. And then I saw a photo a few weeks ago of Fergie, I think, with a black polish pedicure and a soft pink manicure.

Eureka.

Deal of the Day: Lands' End

Great news, girls! Lands End loves bloggers so much that the label is giving us a 25%-off Family and Friends discount a full day before everyone else gets it (click on the picture above to read the details and get the code)! Unfortunately, the discount doesn't apply to our new favorite, Lands' End Canvas, but there are plenty of options for your entire family at Lands' End (I'm hearing great things from you all about their swimsuits)- and right now, you can also get free shipping on purchases of $50 or more by using the code SHOWERS and pin 7421 at checkout. I'm personally going to be perusing the children's uniform section. Punky's school clothes are looking a bit ragged.

Idea: The Basket as a Handbag

I was charmed by this entry from a new style blog I'm reading called Fieldguided. In it, the author, Anabela, posts pictures of 1960s style icon Jane Birkin, carrying a basket around with her as a handbag. Check out these photos from her blog...

What a wonderful idea! Wicker and wood are so hot this season that now is the perfect time to make this unique look your own. And you can bet no one else will have your handbag.
