Gaultier for Target: Hot or Hyped?

If you're a follower of all things Target (and you're crazy if you're not), then you might already know that John Paul Gaultier's new line is set to debut at select Targets on March 7th (to find out if the line will appear at your own local Target, go here).

I couldn't wait to see his designs, but now that I've gotten a sneak peek, my feelings are mixed. See for yourself...

I Love...

...Gabrielle Blair's effortless maternity style. She looked spectacular at Mom 2.0 last weekend and recently wrote a post on her five favorite maternity outfits that even the non-pregnant fashionista will enjoy perusing. I only wish I'd had her whimsical (and remarkably inexpensive!) fashion sense when I was expecting.

...This 1960s vintage leopard coat, which can be worn belted or free. Give me a glass of wine and I could easily pull the trigger on this one.

You Can Do This: Eva Longoria Parker's Casual Neutrals

I absolutely LOVE Eva Longoria Parker's outfit in this shot- so simple, so comfortable, yet so, so chic. She manages to rock both the neutrals trend and the bright blue bag (which all the stars seem to be carrying lately) and yet still look refreshingly NORMAL. Easier said than done in Hollywood.

So let's figure out how we can copy this look on a realistic budget, shall we?

Help Desk: Can You Find a Cheaper Alternative to This Neutral Skirt?

Today's question comes from She's Still Got It reader Krysta:

I'm looking for a neutral colored skirt (grey or natural color) to wear over leggings or tights with boots. It needs to be work appropriate (so not super short) but cute. I found one at LOFT (not on their website though) but it was $70 and I pretty much never pay full price. Any ideas?

Here's the skirt Krysta wants:

If you can wait, Krysta, the first thing I'd advise you to do is get on LOFT's mailing list and keep that skirt in your cart. LOFT often has fantastic sales where even new items are discounted up to 50% for a day or two and they will send you e-mails about the sales if you're on the list (today, for example, full price purchases are 25% off if your order includes pants)- and even if your skirt sells out before it's discounted, keep a close eye on it, because I've noticed LOFT often gets items back in stock.

But if you want a pretty neutral skirt RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE? Here are some options at more affordable prices.
..

This classic pencil skirt from The Limited is on sale for $39.50- and it would go with just about anything.

Street Style: Mom 2.0

Just like Blissdom, the Mom 2.0 conference in Houston had its own unique style. With so many widely read bloggers in attendance (and so many cameras flashing), you knew there was going to be some serious fashion in the house. Here are a few standouts from the weekend....

Guilty Pleasure: Lilly Pulitzer

Lilly Pulitzer clothing has been around since before I was born and I don't think the line has ever really changed. It's not typically my style. It's totally over my budget. But I can't help it. I love it- and any time I can find Lilly Pulitzer on discount, I buy it.

When I see Lilly Pulitzer clothes, I'm transported in my mind to Seaside, the retro Florida beach where fabulous restaurants, shops, and ice cream parlors all are in walking distance, or to Charleston, an oceanfront town with its own signature style. The traditional Lilly Pulitzer colors are bright pinks and greens and blues, and if you wear Lilly, it's best to have only one or two pieces in your wardrobe at a time. The line is so identifiable that it's easy to experience Lilly overkill!

Mom 2.0: The Mad Men Party

I was thrilled to get another opportunity to head to the Mom 2.0 Summit in Houston this past weekend, one of my all-time favorite events of the year. When I learned that the whole thing was going to kick off with a Mad Men-themed party on Thursday night, I was literally beside myself; Mad Men is my absolute favorite show on television, and if I'm honest, I have to admit that a good third of my closet is at least slightly Mad Men inspired.

That said, there was one dress in my closet that I'd bought last year, specifically because it was so Mad Men, I couldn't stand it. The dress was a little too snug back then, but I was determined to lose the weight and wear the dress... some day.

Horrors: Daisy Dukes with Black Tights

Ordinarily, I'm all about Nicole Richie's style, but this? Oh hell no.

And before you slam Nicole, let it be said that she's far from alone with this look, ladies. I've seen the daisy-dukes-with-black-tights look over and over again on the streets of New York and LA, and it appears to be spreading like genital warts.

Recap: Fashion Week, Fall RTW 2010

I'm not spending much time on New York's Fall Fashion Week- hell, it's enough work getting us all ready for Spring/Summer- but I did take a look at photos from all the shows. Here are a few upcoming trends to keep in mind.

The prevailing colors for fall are black, white, and gray. The lingerie effect of nude silks and black lace are still very much in evidence. I liked this simple look from Diane Von Furstenberg.

Spring Colors: Turquoise

Expect to see plenty of turquoise this spring and summer- It's one of the hot colors of the season- Nordstrom featured its turquoise bags in its latest catalog- and there are lots of ways to work it into your wardrobe, even if you've only got a sawbuck to spare! Here are some ideas that won't put you in the poorhouse...

The Hose Knows

Have you ever been getting ready for an event and wondered what kind of tights or hose would be appropriate with your outfit? Worry no more, my friends! Here's a quick overview.

If you're going for edgy and fashion-forward, black opaque tights are still the way to go. They are being paired with everything, including spring dresses and, as Jessica Biel did here, neutral shoes. If the opaque look is too much for you, sheer black hose works fine, too. Personally, I'm only wearing opaque hose with fall/winter looks, but I might do a floral dress if I can pull off a look like this one...

I Love...

I'm sorely tempted by this pretty floral necklace, $38 at A.Tierney. It comes in a wide array of colors, including a soft yellow that's to die for.

It's well known that a great coat covers a multitude of sins. I'm loving Lauren Conrad in this bright yellow coat.

I'm coveting these $88 silk cotton cargo pants at White House/Black Market. I don't like buying pants online because I really like to try pants on before I buy them. However, these are so cute, I sort to want to break my own rule.

What I Wore: Superbowl Party

I wore this to a Superbowl party last night at the home of some friends from New Orleans. We had a blast and I'm so glad I remembered I had a boxful of Mardi Gras beads in our attic moments before we left for the party! The kids and I were definitely ready for a Saints win!

And on this note, what do you think of starting a Flickr group for this blog? You could add photos of yourself in outfits you love or post photos of options for a big event and get our advice, or post something you bought for a great price or the results of a fabulous trip to your hairstylist or any other fashion and beauty-related photos that you took yourself. I'll turn some of them into posts on this blog. I love the idea of letting readers help you all choose what to wear.

Epilogue

Thank you all so much for your input on what to wear to the Friday night Blissdom cocktail party. I had been all set to go with outfit number one, but there were so many votes for number two, many seemingly because it was more casual/less stuffy, that I took a cue and combined the ideas. I went with the little black dress, but ditched the statement pearls and updo and instead wore my hair down and curly. I also put on the red lipstick, which still feels weird but does photograph well! When I got to the party, held at a nightclub, I felt like I'd made the perfect choice.

This look is courtesy of you, my friends! With me is the lovely Isabel Kallman of Alpha Mom.

Splurge: Hunter Boots

I really don't splurge on clothing and accessories very often. I'm more of a get-the-most-bang-for-my-buck kind of girl than a save-and-save-and-save-and-save-and-buy-one-handbag one.

But when I started seeing Hunter boots around town and in the magazines last fall, I was intrigued.

Spring Couture 2010: The Takeaway

I finally got around to looking at the images from last week's Spring Couture shows in Paris. Obviously, most of us won't be ringing up Jean Paul Gaultier for a dress any time soon, but the shows are helpful in terms of seeing what stylists, magazine editors and designers are thinking about for the upcoming season. If you're a regular reader of this blog, most of the trends will already be familiar to you.

Black, white and flashes of red abounded on the runways. Christian Dior put on the most visually stunning show, with looks that reminded me of something straight out of a 1950s-era Vogue.

Go Team Polo! USA!!

(via Yahoo)

I simply heart Ralph Lauren's Team USA designs for the American Olympians, but what are those... those... specks on the shirts and jackets? Those tiny blotches opposite the Team USA patches? Testing out the Trend: Red Lips

On the heels of our discussion about red lipstick a few weeks ago, Avon came calling.

Style Inspiration: All the Pretty Birds

I recently discovered a blog called All the Pretty Birds, a record of the photographs Tamu McPherson takes of fashionistas on the streets of Paris, Milan, and anywhere else she happens to be.

It's a great way to see what the world's most stylish women are wearing on a daily basis and it's given me lots of ideas. Hair You Can Have: The Side Braid

So many hair trends are completely unrealistic for the average woman- We just don't have the time/money/stylist it takes to pull the look off. But here's a hot, hot look for Spring that anyone with medium to long hair can do- the side braid.

Side braids were all over the runways for the Spring 2010 fashion shows, and during last week's fashion events in Paris, many of the hautest women in town were sporting side braids on the streets. I'm also starting to see them on the starlets at Hollywood premieres.

My Speak No Evil Grammy Recap

Grammy fashion is always entertaining and this year was no exception, particularly since last night brought us so few all-out hits and so many delightful misses.

But apparently, the Lord was anticipating my impending schadenfreude, because I happened to watch a sermon yesterday morning in which the preacher basically said, "Quit writing snarky posts, LINDSAY." At least, that's what it felt like, which means either I'm an insufferable narcissist or the preacher is really good at making everyone feel like he's talking directly to them.
