Messy Beach Hair: Yay or Nay?

Oh, Jennifer. Your hair.

This messy "beach" hair trend has been in effect for some time, but lately I think it's going too far. I'm starting to see it on moms at the grocery and my daughter's elementary school, and while it can look hip on a woman with size two designer clothing and a professionally made-up face, when I see "artfully" messed up hair on a woman out and about in old slouchy jeans or sweatpants? It just makes her look like there might be a screw loose somewhere.

Help Desk: Arm Hair. Ignore or Eliminate?

Here's a great help desk question from a reader who wishes to remain anonymous:
I am 38 and part Italian. As part of my Italian heritage, I get a nice olive like complexion, but I also get hair. Yep, hair! Not just on my head, but well, all over the place - chin, face, legs, arms. Yes, I know all women get hair in all of these places, but my hair tends to be of the abundant, dark, dark brown variety. I can take care of the hair issue for most of my body (No Tom Selleck moustache for me, no thank you!), but I wonder about the arm hair issue.

Yes, that is my burning question: the arm hair.

Shop Your Closet: Add a Blazer and Heels to a Summer Dress for a Hot Spring Look

Lauren Conrad has the right idea with this outfit and you've probably already got a version of it in your closet.

Those cute little floral dresses you save for each summer can easily be transformed into a sophisticated Spring look with a simple black blazer and heels. I am SO trying this.

Beauty Tip: How to Cover Up Those Stray Grays

Now that I'm right around the corner from 35, I've started finding silver strands among the gold. Er, brown. Whatever. Anyway, at first I had only a few, which I could easily pluck out with tweezers. But in the last year or so, they've multiplied like extraterrestrial pods in a 1950s horror movie.

Finally, a couple of months ago, I dyed it, which was not all that big of a deal since I've been dying my hair periodically since I was a teenager. But what to do about new pesky grays in between touch-ups?

New Find: Check Etsy for Jewelry First

Etsy, the aggregate site for all things handmade, isn't a new find for me- I've been using it for years. But too often, I overlook it when searching for jewelry and really, it's where I should be going first. Looking for a unique statement necklace? A cuff bracelet? A cocktail ring? Etsy will almost always have what you're looking for, often for a fraction of the price you'd pay at a retail store. And now that you can shop either for vintage or handmade wares on Etsy, the jewelry options are even cooler.

Here are a few of my faves from a recent search...

Hot Trend: Snakeskin Accessories

One hot trend for Spring that I'm loving-- when done right-- is snakeskin.

New Find: Esprit. It's Ba-ack...

Emmy Rossum was at an Esprit event last week decked out in, you guessed it, Esprit.

It's a brand I really hadn't thought much about since grade school. But Esprit and I actually have a special history- I'll never forget the day in fourth grade when my mom took me shopping and, for the first time in my life, bought me an outfit that didn't include...

I've discovered an online store out of Dallas called Sonya Renee, which offers handmade jewelry that's trendy, unique, and affordable. SCORE! The entire site is worth checking out, but here are a few quick favorites...

I love the simplicity of this 30" silver chain, and I'm seeing similar (and certainly more expensive) versions on lots of celebrities lately. Sonya Renee's is $85.

New Find: L.L. Bean Signature

I got several e-mails from readers last week (and received a catalog in the mail) about L.L. Bean Signature, which I suppose is the answer to Lands End Canvas, which is clearly meant to be an alternative to J. Crew and Banana Republic.

Anyway.

I'm not as excited about L.L. Bean Signature as I am about Lands End Canvas, but the line does have some cute basics and it's worth checking out. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the catalog...

In the world of couture, one of the most frequently mispronounced names is Hermès, the French fashion house known for its scarves and handbags.

Hot Trend: The Shirtdress

Vanessa Hudgens in a shirtdress only a skinny girl could get away with.

I've never liked the classic shirtdress- It always seemed to come in awkward, stiff fabric and it never fit my frame quite right. However, shirtdresses are all the rage this season and I'm happy to find that they've been reinvented in all kinds of fabrics and styles that will flatter nearly any figure.

What I love about most about this season's shirtdresses is that they're relatively inexpensive, they work in just about any social situation imaginable, and they never really go out of style.

Hot Trend: Graphic Prints

One of my least favorite hot trends for Spring is the graphic print, which technology has made possible only in the last few years. Think of graphic prints as color copies on fabric instead of paper.

Swimsuit Help for the Abdominally Challenged

I've gotten several requests to do a post on flattering swimwear and if it seemed to take me a long time, it's only because I HATE shopping for swimsuits myself. We all have to do it, though, so here's the post.

The good news is that there are more options out there to suck in and camouflage your trouble spots than ever before. The bad news is that you're going to have to spend some cash on them. Yes, ladies, when it comes to swimwear, you get what you pay for.

Deal of the Day: 25% Off at Charlotte Russe with This Link

Remember when I told you about Charlotte Russe's 24-hour $10 flats sale? What a triumph! Some of you bought TEN PAIRS of them that day, and even now, I see friends and She's Still Got It readers wearing CR flats everywhere I go. Fortunately, they are both comfortable and cute and now I'm a big Charlotte Russe fan.

If you're not all that familiar with the brand, Charlotte Russe is a competitor of Forever 21, and lately they're really giving the hip discount chain a run for its money. I've been satisfied with everything I've bought from Charlotte Russe over the last few years, I've heard raves from friends and readers about CR jewelry, and I really like the online selection.

Kate Winslet and Sam Mendez Split

Kate and Sam, in happier(?) times.

It's just been announced that Kate Winslet and her husband, director Sam Mendez have split.

This is awful news. I've loved Kate since her big screen debut in Heavenly Creatures and I think I've seen every movie she's been in since. Kate just seems like one of us (albeit an incredibly talented, beautiful version of one of us!) and I've admired the way she's stayed out of the paparazzi spotlight and limited her movie projects since having kids. She just seems like a great mom and a smart woman. I've also loved that she manages to stay glamorous and absolutely stunning without dieting down to a size 00 like most of her Hollywood counterparts.

I know you've all been waiting with bated breath for my Gaulter for Target dress to arrive, right? Right? Anyone?

Hot Trend: Clogs

Alexa Chung wears hers with black tights.

What's hot right now? High heeled clogs!

If you're lucky, you already have a pair or two in your closet. I think I've had at least one pair on hand ever since I bought my first Sam & Libby pair in college. What a Steal!

Look what She's Still Got It reader Irina picked up during a fabulous sale at Talbots this week! Here's what she had to say about this cute coat:
I fell in love with this coat from Talbots! I'm not even a Talbots kind of girl, but this coat spoke to me! Original price 269.00, on sale 40% (off the sale price) came to 80$, with me applying for their credit card and store rewards, the coat (wool blend) ended up 62$!
I'm in love!

Horrors: Salma Hayek

It pains me greatly to show you this picture because I really like Salma Hayek and ordinarily, I also like her style.

Deal of the Day: Talbots Sale!

This from reader Irina:

Talbots (at least in our area) is having a crazy big sale. At our outlet store most things are at least 40% with some going up to 80%. It was just too good not to share.
For the most part, it is stuff that I personally wouldn't wear. But some things were to die for! There are a lot of nice coats and some cute shoes (a pair of blue suade flats were adorable)...
I am just really excited about that sale. I got wool-blend pants for 17$, a spring skirt for 7$, suede shoes for 40$ and a HOT orange herringbone coat for 62$! At their quality - its practically free :)

Shop Your Closet: Turn Winter's Skinny Jeans into Spring's Cute Crops

If you're anything like me, you have at least a few pairs of skinny jeans that you wore all winter tucked into boots. Here's a pair I practically lived in... (Seriously. Ask anyone in the car rider pick-up line.)

Now that Spring is coming, it's time to put those boots in the closet. The jeans, though? They'll do great double duty as one of Spring's hottest looks- skinny crop pants!

Hot Trend: Nautical Style

Spring's nautical trend can have you regatta-ready in no time flat. Nautical pieces are always good to invest in, since they pop up year after year in designers' spring/summer collections and never really go out of style.

My advice? Work a few pieces into your wardrobe subtly in order to keep this look from becoming costumey. There's no need to slap an anchor on your outfit to let everyone know where you're going with it.

Gaultier for Target: The Reviews are In

As I wrote last week, the Gaultier line for Target debuted at select Target stores (but not that select- It's available in three Targets here in Nashville alone) on Sunday. Hot Trend: Military Chic

Designer Andreas Melbostaad's take on the military look for Spring (Phi Spring 2010 show).

Nicky Hilton in a military-style jacket.

Designers really seem to have our budgets in mind this season- With all the neutral pieces out there right now, it makes sense to work the military trend into the mix. Camouflage and khaki will fit right in with many of your neutrals and whites- and it's another look that never really goes out of fashion. Lace Up Oxfords: Yay or Nay?

Steve Madden at ShopStyle

One Spring style I just can't ignore anymore is the lace-up Oxford. They are all the rage this Spring, they are meant to be worn bare-legged with shorts or dresses (J. Crew paired them with footies like the ones you use to try on shoes at the mall!), and...

J. Crew's Take on How to Wear the Trends of Spring 2010

Some of my favorite fashion inspiration comes from catalogs. Catalogs are a great way to see the latest looks without spending money on magazines- my current favorites are White House Black Market, J Crew,Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus- and most websites now offer their catalogs online (I've linked to the catalog pages above), so you can save a few trees.

I picked up a J. Crew catalog a couple of weeks ago and it was so beautifully done that I had to share it with you. It's an excellent primer both on how to layer clothing for spring and on which colors work well together. Best of all, J. Crew offers so many basics that you can easily find many of these items more cheaply. You probably already have some of them in your closet.

You Can Do This: Reese Witherspoon

Regular She's Still Got It reader Julia has a question:

Hot Trend: Coral

Coral, the love child of pink and orange, is another hot color for Spring/Summer and it looks good on just about anyone.

Lands' End is one of my husband's favorite clothing lines and I have to admit that everything I've ever bought from Lands' End has been top notch. But I tend to buy basics there, like coats and sweaters and ski wear- It has never been the first place I've looked for the latest trends.

I have to admit, I've never shopped at dressbarn.

However, when the brand contacted me and offered to send out one of its wardrobe basics for me to try out, I was happy to do it. You all know full well that smart girls mix high end pieces with less expensive ones for maximum effect, and if I can add dressbarn to my search list, I'm all for it.

Hot Trend: All-Natural Accessories

As you well know by now, neutral colors are all the rage for Spring- which makes it a perfect time for some all-natural accessorizing. Designers are making liberal use of materials like cork, straw, linen, wood and raffia, and luckily for us, that makes for some very affordable shoes, bags and jewelry. Here are a few of my personal faves...

I have looked at a lot of raffia/straw/linen/cork shoes now, y'all and for the money, these $65 sandals from Victoria's Secret are my top pick. They are uber stylish, way sexy, and totally affordable. Plus, you can probably get them for even less, since Victoria's Secret always has some kind of deal going on. Just do a Google search for "Victoria's Secret Coupon codes" and you'll turn up the latest deals.
